A Mother's Love

The startling sound of cries elsewhere.

A mother peels herself from the bed.

Shirking off her groggy state,

Performing her duty to tend to her newborn child.

Her soul entwined with theirs throughout the journey of pregnancy.

Her breath flows through their lungs,

Her blood beats within their heart,

Her nourishment sustains their vitality,

Her voice serenades their soul.

In the middle of every night,

She soothes them back to sleep in her arms.

Caressing their tender frame until the child is reassured.

In sickness and in health, the mother will be there.

Awakened to attention by every beck and call,

Fighting tooth and nail to nurture their child with undying love.

In times of great distress,

Her supernatural intuition propels her into action.

None dare to encounter a protective mother scorned.

Her child is her flesh and blood.

From infancy to childhood and the perilous trials of adolescence,

She’ll always be there,

Lending an open ear and heart.

Although the frustration and fatigue may burden her with each passing day,

She rallies herself with unwavering devotion.

Since she is a mother and they are her kin.

Her child will grow up someday,

Such a fragile thing.

Leaving the nest to fend for themselves one day at a time.

Yet she does not yield from her responsibilities.

Parenthood lasts forever.

Years pass swiftly by and their child is now an adult,

Still, she offers affection in the form of many endless guises:

Laundry, food, and a warm bed (to name a few),

To return to whenever they venture home.

Forever worried about their health and safety,

Whether they’ll be okay as they wander alone.

Sending a prayer and well wishes in her thoughts,

But eagerly anticipating her child’s return.

She awaits by the phone, hoping to hear their voice.

Her ears are listening out for the doorbell.

When the day finally comes,

As the adult they’ve now become greet her at the door,

She embraces them like no other can.

Since she is a mother and they are her kin.

A mother’s love is undying and boundless,

Beating vicariously in their child’s chest wherever they may roam.

A poem inspired by Mother’s Day.
